    GOBARdhan stands for Galvanizing Organic Bio-Agro Resources Dhan. It is a flagship Government of India initiative that converts organic waste, such as cattle dung, agricultural residue, food waste, kitchen waste, market waste, and other biodegradable materials, into biogas, compressed biogas (CBG), bio-CNG, organic manure, and bio-slurry. It was first launched in 2018 under the Swachh Bharat Mission (Grameen) and is coordinated by the Department of Drinking Water & Sanitation, Ministry of Jal Shakti.

    Why was the scheme introduced?

    India produces enormous quantities of biodegradable waste every day:

    • More than 300 million tonnes of agricultural residue annually.
    • Hundreds of millions of tonnes of cattle dung.
    • Large quantities of municipal food waste, vegetable market waste, sugar industry waste, poultry litter, and other organic residues.

    How Does GOBARdhan Work?

    The process is simple:

    Step 1: Organic waste is collected.

    Step 2: Waste is fed into a biogas plant.

    Step 3: Anaerobic digestion takes place (decomposition without oxygen).

    Step 4: Biogas is produced.

    Step 5: Biogas is purified into Compressed Biogas (CBG) if required.

    Step 6: The remaining slurry becomes organic fertilizer.

    Thus, nothing goes to waste.

      • Expand pipeline connectivity.
