Dr. Manmohan Singh (1932–2024): A Biography
Dr. Manmohan Singh Biography
Dr. Manmohan Singh (26 September 1932 – 26
December 2024) was an eminent Indian economist, statesman, and politician who
served as the 14th Prime Minister of India from 2004 to 2014. Widely regarded
as the architect of India's 1991 economic liberalization, he played a
transformative role in reshaping the country's economy and integrating it with
the global market. A senior leader of the Indian National Congress, he was also
India's first Sikh Prime Minister and one of the country's most respected
public intellectuals.
Born on 26 September 1932 in the village
of Gah, Punjab (now in Pakistan), Dr. Singh belonged to a Sikh family.
Following the Partition of India in 1947, his family migrated to Amritsar,
where he continued his education. An outstanding student from an early age, he
earned a Master's degree in Economics from Punjab University in 1954. He later
studied at the University of Cambridge, graduating with First Class Honours
(Economics Tripos) in 1957. He completed his Doctor of Philosophy (D.Phil.) in
Economics from Nuffield College, University of Oxford, in 1962, laying the
foundation for a distinguished academic and public service career.
Dr. Singh began his professional journey
as an academic, teaching economics at Panjab University and later at the Delhi
School of Economics. His expertise soon led him to key positions in the
Government of India. He served as Chief Economic Advisor from 1972 to 1976 and
later as Finance Secretary in the Ministry of Finance. From 1982 to 1985, he
was the Governor of the Reserve Bank of India, followed by his tenure as Deputy
Chairman of the Planning Commission between 1985 and 1987. Through these roles,
he earned a reputation as one of India's foremost economic policymakers.
His entry into active politics came in
1991 when Prime Minister P. V. Narasimha Rao appointed him as Union Minister
for Finance. At a time when India faced a severe balance-of-payments crisis,
Dr. Singh introduced a series of landmark economic reforms that dismantled the
Licence Raj, reduced government controls, encouraged private enterprise,
welcomed foreign investment, and opened India's economy to global trade. These
reforms are widely credited with laying the foundation for India's emergence as
one of the world's fastest-growing major economies. He also became a Member of
the Rajya Sabha in 1991 and later served as Leader of the Opposition in the
Upper House from 1998 to 2004.
In 2004, Dr. Manmohan Singh became the
Prime Minister of India, leading the United Progressive Alliance (UPA)
government. He served two consecutive terms until 2014, making him one of
India's longest-serving Prime Ministers. His tenure was marked by a focus on
inclusive economic growth, social welfare, and institutional reforms. His
government enacted several landmark legislations, including the Mahatma Gandhi
National Rural Employment Guarantee Act (MGNREGA), which guaranteed wage
employment in rural areas, and the Right to Information (RTI) Act, which
significantly strengthened transparency and accountability in governance.
One of the defining achievements of his
premiership was the signing of the historic Indo-US Civil Nuclear Agreement in
2008, which ended India's decades-long nuclear isolation and paved the way for
international civilian nuclear cooperation. Under his leadership, India also
witnessed sustained economic growth for much of the decade, despite facing the
challenges of the global financial crisis of 2008.
Known for his humility, integrity, and
scholarly approach to governance, Dr. Manmohan Singh was respected across
political lines for his calm demeanor and commitment to public service.
Although his second term in office was marked by political challenges and
coalition pressures, his contributions to India's economic transformation and
institutional development remain widely acknowledged.
Dr. Manmohan Singh passed away on 26
December 2024 at the age of 92. He is remembered as one of modern India's most
influential economists and statesmen, whose vision and leadership helped shape
the country's economic trajectory and strengthened its position on the global
stage.
