India's Four-Wheeler Sales Rose 28% in June 2026 Compared to Last Year

The
June 2026 four-wheeler sales report, released last week, highlighted several
significant developments in the Indian automobile market. Apart from recording
a sharp increase in vehicle sales compared to June last year, discussions
around E20 petrol also remained in focus.
A
total of 410,853 passenger vehicles were sold across the country in June 2026,
compared to 319,412 units sold in June 2025. This represents a 28% year-on-year
growth in sales.
Electric
Vehicles Gain Strong Momentum
India's
passenger vehicle market is witnessing rapid transformation, with customers
increasingly shifting towards electric vehicles (EVs).
According
to the June EV sales report, 31,823 electric cars were sold during the month.
This marks a 108% increase compared to 15,318 units sold in June 2025 and a 19%
rise over 26,682 units sold in May 2026.
More
importantly, electric vehicles increased their share in the overall passenger
vehicle market from 6.6% in May 2026 to 7.7% in June 2026, reflecting the
growing acceptance of EVs among Indian buyers.
Public
Concern Over Higher Ethanol-Blended Fuel
Two
recent government decisions taken over the past one and a half months have
created concerns among both vehicle manufacturers and consumers.
The
government granted an excise duty exemption on fuel containing 22% to 30%
ethanol, while the Bureau of Indian Standards (BIS) finalized fuel
specifications and standards for these higher ethanol blends.
These
developments sparked speculation that the government was preparing to introduce
E25 petrol, moving beyond the existing E20 fuel.
The
government's decision to increase ethanol blending from 10% to 20% (E20) within
just three years has already faced strong public opposition across the country.
Considering this backlash, the government may delay the implementation of E25
petrol.
Originally,
the government planned to introduce E20 nationwide by 2030, but the target was
achieved five years ahead of schedule. The faster rollout has led to concerns
among consumers, making policymakers more cautious before moving towards E25.
Kia
Seltos Dominates the Mid-Size SUV Segment
Kia
India continues to strengthen its position in the mid-size SUV segment through
the impressive performance of the Kia Seltos.
The
company sold 9,654 units of the Seltos in June 2026, registering an impressive 85%
year-on-year growth.
In
recent months, the Seltos has outperformed nearly every SUV in the
sub-4.5-meter mid-size SUV category, except Mahindra Thar and Maruti Suzuki
Victoris. It surpassed competitors including Hyundai Creta, Maruti Grand
Vitara, Toyota Hyryder, Renault Duster, and Skoda Kushaq.
Hyundai
Creta Records 55% Annual Decline
Hyundai
Creta posted a disappointing performance in June 2026.
Only
7,168 units of the SUV were sold during the month, compared to 15,786 units sold
in June 2025, resulting in a 55% year-on-year decline.
The
primary reason behind the sharp drop was supply disruption. Hyundai's supplier
facilities experienced operational challenges during the month, directly
affecting Creta dispatches.
While
the Creta has traditionally remained among India's top 10 best-selling cars,
strong demand for the Tata Punch, Tata Nexon, and Mahindra Scorpio pushed the
model significantly lower in the rankings.
Creta
Drops Out of the Top 10
Once
one of India's most popular SUVs, the Hyundai Creta appears to be gradually
losing its market dominance.
The
June 2026 sales report revealed that the SUV not only failed to secure a place
among the Top 10 best-selling cars, but also dropped out of the Top 25
altogether.
For
Hyundai, however, there was some positive news as the Venue and Exter recorded
higher sales than the Creta during the month.
Maruti
Victoris Gets Price Cuts Along with Attractive Discounts
Customers
purchasing the CNG variants of the Maruti Victoris this month can receive
discounts of up to ₹80,000, while buyers of the petrol mild-hybrid variants can
enjoy benefits worth ₹60,000.

Maruti Suzuki recently reduced the prices of four Victoris variants—ZXi (O) MT,
ZXi (O) AT, ZXi+ (O) MT, and ZXi+ (O) AT—by up to ₹39,000, even as prices of
several other models were increased.
Buyers
Can Save Up to ₹1.30 Lakh
Maruti
Suzuki currently has two highly popular SUVs in the Indian market—Brezza and
Victoris, both sold through Arena dealerships.
Thanks
to the availability of both petrol and CNG options, Victoris continues to
attract strong customer demand.
This
July, buyers can save up to ₹1.30 lakh, including discounts of up to ₹90,000
along with the recent ₹39,000 price reduction, making it one of the most
attractive SUV deals in the market.
